Words of Meaning

Green Witch

This is just a short list of common magickal words. I'll add to it as time allows.

Adept - Word for an individual highly experienced and proficient in a particular magickal craft.

Aeromancy - Divination by the stars.

Aka - The cord between the astral body and the physical body, most likely this concept is derived from the biblical reference to a "silver cord" connected the body and the soul.

Akasha - The fifth element of magick and the occult, this is the spiritual ether, often called the "Otherworld".

Alchemy - A form of high magick which stems from the middle ages noted by the attempts of alchemists to make lead turn into gold.

Altar - an elevated platform in which the candles, pentacle, chalice etc are placed. Altar cloths are sometimes used to cover the surface. Rituals and offerings to the Gods may be made here.

Amulet - An object empowered to protect it’s holder

Animistic - The belief that all forms of nature have the Divine spirit within.

Ankh - symbol of life, fertility and immortality

Anointing - smoothing oil onto an object

Arcane - secret or hidden

Asperger - A bundle of fresh herbs either carrying dew or dowsed with spring water, used to sprinkle the water during ritual purification.

Astral Plane - the plane between the mental and physical planes. The place of instinct and emotion

Astral Projection - Separating your astral body from the physical body to travel in the astral or dream time.

Athame - a black handled, double edged, ritual knife. The athame is not used for cutting physical objects

Attune - To bring different psyches into harmony.

Bale - something that is harmful. Disaster

Balefire - A ritual bonfire.

Bane - something that will cause harm or death

Bells - Often used as ritual tools. They can be used to invoke directional energies, to ring in the sunrise on a Sabbat, or to frighten away faeries and baneful spirits

Besom - A straw broom used by Witches to cleanse the area before a ritual

Bind - to mentally tie someone down, restrain them from doing something

Blessed Be - a term widely used by witches when meeting or parting with others

Bolline - White handled knife used for cutting herbs and such

Book of Shadows - the witch’s book in which rituals, thoughts, correspondences, and other information is written

Cauldron - A (usually) large, black, iron pot used for burning or mixing things in

Circle - a purified/cleansed place in which rituals are performed. More correctly this is a sphere, you should imagine that the circle surrounds you like a ball

Chalice - a cup or goblet. Represents the element of Water

Chant - to say the same words repeatedly to raise power or fix a particular thought

Cone of Power - energy raised from the body

Consecrate - To make something sacred, to give it a special purpose

Coven - an organisation of witches, ideally 13, who regularly meet and/or perform rituals together

Deosil - clockwise or sunwise movement. Often used for casting the circle or dancing around Sabbat fires

Divination - the discovery of unknown information. For example, Reading tea leaves, ashes, candle wax, using Tarot cards and Runes.

Elementals - spirits that personify the four corners, Water, Fire, Earth and Air
